Our washing machine broke last weekend. While the rest of the country was Superbowl partying, I was mourning the loss of an old family friend. Well, maybe not mourning. I have secretly been wishing for this to happen for months now. It is old. Really, really old. It died a slow death. Basically screamed at us to fix it as it grunted and groaned through each load. Towels and denim were especially hard. But we didn’t listen. We just turned up the volume on the TV.
Our dryer isn’t much better. It takes FOREVER to dry anything. And sometimes the heat part, you know the thing that is supposed to do the drying? It doesn’t turn on for some reason.
We had a Sears technician come on on Tuesday to look at the washer. It was going to cost $200 to fix it. No thanks-we’ll get a new one. Yippee!
So….we are getting a NEW SET!!!! I say “we” but I really mean “me”. My husband hasn’t touched the laundry for months. I am so excited!! I feel like a little kid at Christmas. I remember my mom, long, long ago, wanting a Dustbuster for Christmas. I thought she was crazy. Why in the world would you want a cleaning tool as a gift? Now, I totally get it.
I did my research online first, and decided on an LG.
#1 The price is right
#2 It will fit in our laundry “closet”
#3 It can be “stacked” – giving us more much needed space (we’ll have room for a freezer! I can’t wait!)
We went to the Home Depot on Thursday to look at the set and then order it. Walked out with a very expensive piece of paper and the promise of delivery on Tuesday. Five days away! No laundry till Tuesday? Will we manage?
Not being able to do laundry has its perks. I feel like I’m on vacation. Generally, there is ALWAYS something dirty that needs cleaning. Now, I’m wearing underwear that I haven’t seen in years. In addition, I’ve realized that not only do I truly have favorite undergarments (do guys have favorite underwear?), I have been unnecessarily taking advantage of the washer and dryer at my fingertips for many years now.
I’ll ask myself, “Is it sort of dirty? Well, a little. It’s a bit wrinkled. Okay…I’ll wash it!” But these past few days it’s more of nostalgic college dorm-life rules. “Does it have a stain? Does it smell? No? Then it’s okay to wear again!”
So here we sit. With dirty clothes, towels and sheets, anxiously awaiting the new machines that promise to make my laundry routine quicker and more efficient. And as much as I’m enjoying my laundry vacation, I am so looking forward to Tuesday night, when I get to try out the new set. Isn’t that disgusting?
I have now officially turned into my mother.
